Scraps of Paper Lore - The Book

"SCRAPS" is a compilation of many of the stories, strange, intriguing, humorous, and even surprising, that Harold Alexander has encountered during his travels, research and conversations with papermakers throughout the world. The 78 page book was originally written as the catalogue for the Paper: Trivia & Treasure exhibition at The Goldstein, The Museum of Design, University of Minnesota, St. Paul, Minnesota. Marjorie and Harold Alexander were the curators of the exhibition held January 30 through April 8, 2000.

This fact filled book gives the reader an intimate knowledge of paper and will stimulate a new awareness and respect for paper. You will find answers that you never thought to ask about paper. For example: Did you know that William Penn brought the first papermaker to American and gave him land for his paper mill? Did you realize that paper has been made from wood for only about 150 years, before that almost all paper was made from old cotton and linen rags? Including mummy wrappings. What happened to all the unwrapped mummies after their wrappings were stripped to make paper? And, how did the invention of the printing press help create individual countries and the development of local languages? A seductive book that will give you something to talk about at your next party. $15.00 plus postage.
